Long-time friends and musical collaborators, The Aching Hearts (Kelly Wells and Ryan Spearman) and Betse & Clarke (Betse Ellis and Clarke Wyatt) present a concert of John Hartford material. All four friends are long-time devotees of Hartford’s catalog and his influences. Betse has learned many of the fiddle tunes that Hartford recorded, and even more from his teachers, especially the Goforth brothers. Betse even composed a fiddle tune honoring Hartford’s memory after his passing (“Riverboat”, recorded with The Wilders). Clarke’s finger-style banjo playing is right in line with the Hartford sound. Betse & Clarke have taken to heart the improvisational style of later Hartford albums, especially “The Speed of the Old Long Bow”. Put that together with Ryan’s brilliant multi-instrumental talents and soothing baritone, reminiscent of Hartford’s voice, the perfect harmony of Kelly Wells along with her impeccable old time guitar rhythm, and a deep knowledge of a long recording career, from Earthwords to Retrograss: you know your ears are in good hands with these artists.
